Community Cohesion

Community cohesion is about how people get along together in our communities.

Community cohesion is important. If people are unable to get on, tension and intolerance start to emerge, which can lead to fragmented neighbourhoods and increases in anti-social behaviour.

In Nottingham, we are working to help people get on well together by trying to:

  • Reduce inequalities, discrimination and levels of deprivation
  • Increase community engagement, sense of belonging and pride
  • Increase and promote interaction between people
  • Increase safety and respect for individuals and communities

What does the Community Cohesion team do

We focus on the specific communities who most need our help at any time. Some of our current work includes:

  • Researching need and developing policy to make sure the resources of the Council and other One Nottingham partners help to build community cohesion
  • Advising other parts of the Council about Nottingham's diverse communities and their needs
  • Supporting new community groups in communities who face particular cohesion challenges, and developing opportunities for groups to work together
  • Working with asylum seekers and refugees to help them settle into Nottingham and access the services they need
  • Bringing together and supporting community groups who support young people at risk of becoming involved in gangs or youth violence
  • Increasing communication and improving relationships between students and other city residents
