Welcome To Greater Nottingham Growth Point

Greater Nottingham was confirmed as a new Growth Point in 2005 by the Department for Communities and Local Government. This web site provides information on what this means for Greater Nottingham, the Growth Point partnership and our objectives for sustainable housing and employment growth.

An important part of achieving sustainable growth is ensuring a coherent planning framework across the whole of Greater Nottingham. In order to prepare this planning framework, the six local authorities, together with the County Councils, are working together to align their Core Strategies. You can find out more about this process by clicking on the Local Development Framework page, via the link on the left of this page.

What are Growth Points?

The Government's Growth Point initiative was announced in 2005 and is designed to provide support to local communities to support large scale and sustainable growth, including new housing, through a partnership with Government. Growth Point status is not a statutory designation but a relationship between Central Government and local partners that that is built on four principles:

  • early delivery of housing as part of growth plans
  • supporting local partners to achieve sustainable growth
  • working with local partners to ensure that infrastructure and service provision keep pace with growth
  • ensuring effective delivery

The Growth Point initiative involves a cross-Government approach involving:

  • Department for Transport
  • DEFRA
  • Environment Agency
  • Natural England and
  • The Highways Agency

The Homes and Communities Agency (HCA) has the lead role in managing the Growth Point initiative through direct liaison with Growth Point partners. Via the HCA, the Government provides funding assistance to Growth Points to support the provision of the essential infrastructure required for sustainable growth.
