Training

Nottingham City Safeguarding Children Partnership is exploring a dynamic training offer that reflects the learning needs to be identified each year. We will post more information about this shortly.

What courses and Information is available?

On this page, you can access a wide range of free or low-cost e-learning and resources designed to support work to safeguard children, young people and vulnerable adults.

After completing the course.

On completion of a course, practitioners should notify their agency training representative to ensure that e-learning is captured on their training record.

Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018

The Nottingham City Safeguarding Children Partnership developed a self-directed learning session to explain the legal guidelines outlined in 'Working Together to Safeguard Children 2018.'

This session aims to help professionals comprehend how to work together with different organisations to safeguard children and improve their overall well-being.

Introduction to Adverse Childhood Experiences

This 50 minute free course has been funded by the Home Office Early Intervention Fund

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) YouTube Video

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are traumatic events that affect children while growing up, such as suffering child maltreatment or living in a household affected by domestic violence, substance misuse or mental illness.

Introduction to the Prevent duty

This is a free course that offers an introduction to the Prevent duty and explains how it aims to safeguard vulnerable people from being radicalised to supporting terrorism or becoming terrorists themselves.

Prevent referrals

This package builds on the Prevent awareness e-learning training. It is designed to make sure that when we share a concern that a vulnerable individual may be being radicalised, that the referral is robust, informed and with good intention, and that the response to that concern is considered, and proportionate.

Channel awareness

This training package is for anyone who may be asked to contribute to, sit on, or even run a Channel Panel. It is aimed at all levels, from a professional who is asked to input and attend for the first time, to a member of staff new to their role and organising a panel meeting.

ACT (Action Counters Terrorism)

ACT eLearning is a counter terrorism awareness product designed for all UK based companies and organisations and available to the public.

Is Someone Close Becoming a Stranger?

It can be hard to know what to do if you’re worried someone close is expressing extreme views or hatred, which could lead to them harming themselves or others. Working with other organisations, the police protect vulnerable people from being exploited by extremists through a Home Office programme called Prevent. 

 

Child Attachment

NICE has developed this e-learning on children’s attachment.  The e-learning aims to support practitioners to better understand attachment, the causes of attachment difficulties, how to recognise the signs of attachment difficulties and how to support children and families affected by attachment difficulties.

Understanding attachment theory

Understanding the basic principles of attachment theory and its importance for practice.

Attachment in children and young people

This resource covers the identification, assessment and treatment of attachment difficulties in children and young people up to age 18 who are adopted from care, in special guardianship, looked after by local authorities in foster homes (including kinship foster care), residential settings and other accommodation, or on the edge of care. It aims to address the many emotional and psychological needs of children and young people in these situations, including those resulting from maltreatment.

CSE training resource, ‘Keep them Safe' 

PACE (Parents against Child Sexual Exploitation) is providing a free CSE training resource for parents and professionals called 'Keep them Safe'. It is an introductory online course designed to help teach the signs and impacts of CSE and what to do if you think a child is being exploited. The resource provides a good overall understanding of CSE with links to films and resources as well as e-safety advice.

Domestic Violence

Equation offers expert training for anyone who wants to develop skills in responding to domestic abuse in their working life, including frontline professionals, community workers and volunteers. Whatever your role, Equation can develop your skills in spotting the signs of abuse, assessing and supporting survivors, and responding to perpetrators.

This is a free online course provided by The Home Office with the objective of training professionals to recognise FGM. The course explores the key issues related to FGM and how these affect the life of the individual. Additionally, there is also an FGM resource pack available from The Home Office.

This course is useful for anyone who is interested in gaining an overview of FGM, particularly frontline staff in healthcare, police, border force and children’s social care.

Awareness of Forced Marriage

This course is aimed at all professionals who have a responsibility to safeguard vulnerable children, young people and adults at risk and is aimed specifically at child protection services, health professionals, education professionals, police officers, children’s social care, adult social care and housing authorities.

Introducing child development

This free session by MindEd is aimed at a universal audience and describes the organisation and development of the young brain. It covers cognitive development, emotional development and moral development before finally describing the issues particular to adolescence.

Talking to your children about emotional resilience and self-harm’

Suitable for parents and professionals. This online course, ‘Talking to your children about emotional resilience and self-harm’, has been designed to provide you with a basic awareness of the subject to help you approach children with confidence about the issue.

Self harm and risky behaviour

This free session by MindEd is aimed at a universal audience and provides the background to self harm in children and teenagers, common associated conditions and the optimal approach to managing it in the community.

Bullying and the impact on the child

This free session by MindEd Ed is aimed at more experienced/specialist users and provides some basic information about childhood bullying, victimisation and its consequences on victims’ mental health and well-being. It also covers what bullying is and how it may affect children’s lives, in order to provide adequate and appropriate support to the victims.

Flashbacks, trauma and bullying

This free session by MindEd is aimed at a universal audience and focuses on single, one-off traumas such as accidents and assaults, and on bullying. Maltreatment and sexual abuse are addressed elsewhere. This session will help practitioners recognise and understand the range of reactions to childhood trauma, including emotional child abuse, maltreatment, bullying, and involvement in a disaster

We need to talk about suicide

 This resource, developed jointly by Health Education England and Public Health England, highlights the devastating impact of suicide on individuals, families and communities.

The resource has been developed with support from a wide range of external partners including the charitable sector, blue light services, academia, experts in mental health and, importantly, people with lived experience, to ensure that it is fit for purpose.

 Zero Suicide Alliance

ZSA provide a range of awareness training options, which provide a better understanding of the signs to look out for and the skills required to approach someone who is struggling, whether that be through social isolation or suicidal thoughts.

This free course is designed to develop an understanding of the international system of human rights protection in relation to modern slavery, but also encourage an appreciation of the influence of International Human Rights Law on the development of the domestic system of human rights protection.

Modern Slavery Awareness

This Home Office programme provides guidance on how to spot the signs of modern slavery, and what to do when you come across a potential victim of modern slavery. This programme aims to give you confidence to follow procedures swiftly and with compassion.

Child Neglect

The course from the Social Care Institute of Excellence contains questions and other activities that help you to develop your understanding of neglect through self-reflection, plus an assessment to see how much you have learnt.

Risk Assessment Tool

Nottingham City Safeguarding Children Partnership and Nottinghamshire Safeguarding Children Partnership have developed the Safer Sleeping Risk Assessment Tool to support practitioners to identify if parents or carers are putting a baby to sleep in an unsafe way.

Self-directed learning session

This free course explores parental substance misuse, its effects on children and parenting capacity and the implications for social work practitioners.

Safeguarding matters: disabled children

This presentation/ training course is based on HM Government Information Sharing Guidance for Practitioners and Managers and has been developed in partnership with Barnardo’s. This course will help you to understand when and how information can be shared legally and professionally, in order to achieve improved outcomes.
