Nottingham Central Library, Angel Row, Nottingham, NG1 6HP
To support reading and learning, the City Library service in partnership with HM Prison Service, has a library inside HMP Nottingham. It is available to inmates, prison officers and others who work in the prison.
The library runs regular Big Book Share sessions for dads. A librarian talks to the prisoners about popular children's books for all ages and helps them choose books for each of their children. They can then record a story onto CD and send to their children, along with the books, so that the children can hear their dad's voice reading the story.
This project promotes reading and literacy with the prisoners and their families and helps maintain contact with their children.
The librarian helps to coordinate the Toe-by-Toe reading scheme where prisoners can support others who are non-readers, or who cannot read very well.
The Nottingham City Library service works in partnership with the NHS to provide library services, including events and activities, to patients in the Wells Road Centre.
