Information on Ukrainian Refugees

To help childcare providers support Ukrainian refugee families we will keep this page updated as we receive any new information or resources.

We are aware from Central Government that there a number of families from the Ukraine settling in Nottingham under the Homes for Ukraine or Ukraine Family Scheme. From the information we have, we do know that the PVI sector was well utilised in the Ukraine with children not starting school there until they are 7 years of age. The following information is to support you if you have Ukrainian Refugee families wishing to access your setting.

Families entering the UK through the Ukraine Family Scheme or the Homes For Ukraine (Sponsorship) Scheme have recourse to public funds. This means that families arriving in England will be able to access the government's existing entitlements and support, if they meet existing eligibility criteria. This includes early years entitlement places and families may also be eligible for universal credit and tax-free childcare.

If you admit a Ukrainian refugee child to your setting, please complete this link for each child - https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=vRE2qqwTrEeCBwD7nqRO3k7hXY7AgY1IiMM2yi4vQ6xUMTlXUDNGMUNFVktZNUFURUFORUFBT0dJUy4u This will take you to an online form which will capture some initial information. This should be completed for all children but will also enable us to cross reference any funding claims for eligible children.

After completing the above form, please claim for each Ukrainian Refugee child as per the standard claiming process each term in relation to early years entitlements funding. This would mean either on the Capita Headcount Portal, confirmation report or adjustment form depending upon the stage we are at during the term. Your funding will follow accordingly in subsequent balance and estimate payments, as per our normal processes. These families are eligible for the early years entitlements under the existing eligibility criteria.

The National Literacy Trust have developed a ‘Time Together’ booklet for parents and carers of 0-5 year olds. This has been translated in Ukrainian and can be downloaded at At_home_booklet_for_parents_final-Ukrainian.pdf (literacytrust.org.uk) This colourful, easy-to-read guide, is full of suggestions for how parents can support their young child's learning at home.

There are local community and voluntary groups and organisations who can offer help, advice and vital support to those arriving in the city. The main Ukrainian support partners are the Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum, Nottingham Arimathea Trust and the Nottingham Ukrainian Cultural Centre This Ukrainian Cultural Centre is run by the Nottingham branch of the Association of Ukrainians in Great Britain and provides a wide range of activities and groups including a Saturday Ukrainian language school, a choir, an orchestra, dancing, theatrical and youth groups. The centre runs welcome sessions and specialist drop-in sessions for Ukrainian refugees and is located at Clawson Lodge (Number 403), Mansfield Road, Carrington, NG5 2DP.
