Learning and Development Requirements
The EYFS Learning and Development Requirements comprise of:
- Seven areas of learning and development and the educational programmes
- The early learning goal which summarises the knowledge, skills and understanding that all children should have gained by the end of the Reception Year
- Assessment requirements for children's achievements and how and when progress should be discussed with parents/carers
In planning and guiding children's activities practitioners must reflect on the different ways that children learn and reflect these in their practice.
The EYFS makes it clear that the characteristics of effective learning are:
- Playing and exploring. Children investigate and experience things and 'have a go'
- Active learning. Children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy achievements
- Creating and thinking critically. Children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas and develop strategies for doing things
These characteristics underpin learning and development across all areas and support the child to remain an effective and motivated learner.
