Role of the DSL for childminders
Audience: Childminders (Must be primary DSL)
Aim: This course will cover the training content specific to the role of DSL as outlined in annex C of EYFS for childminders
Course length/sessions: 1.5 hrs

Venue: Online via Microsoft Teams
This course is designed to support childminders undertake the role of Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) within their setting. It provides a comprehensive understanding of statutory safeguarding responsibilities in line with the EYFS safeguarding and welfare requirements and local safeguarding procedures.
Participants will develop knowledge and confidence in:
-Building and maintaining a strong safeguarding culture within their setting
-Implementing safer recruitment practices
-Developing, reviewing, and embedding effective safeguarding policies and procedures
-Supporting and working with assistants to safeguard children (where applicable)
-Understanding local child protection procedures and working effectively with statutory services and safeguarding partners
-Making, managing, and escalating safeguarding referrals in line with EYFS requirements (including paragraph 3.10)
-Managing and responding to allegations against adults working with children
-Promoting and ensuring online safety for children
The course will also enable participants to:
-Confidently identify and respond to signs of abuse and neglect
-Understand the full scope of the DSL role, including record-keeping, information sharing, and multi-agency working
-Effectively engage with services such as MASH and LADO
-Strengthen their understanding of statutory safeguarding responsibilities and compliance expectations
-Apply learning through practical scenarios to support decision-making and professional judgement
Overall, the course aims to strengthen safeguarding knowledge, increase confidence in decision-making, and promote safe, effective practice within childminding settings.
