Planning Applications

The Environmental Health and Safer Places Team helps with planning by looking out for pollution problems in new developments before they happen.

Important things to think about when planning include:

  1. Internal Layout: Making sure the inside of buildings is designed to reduce pollution risks.
  2. Sound Insulation: Suggesting ways to control noise, like special windows or ventilation systems.
  3. Noise Assessments: Checking how much noise a new building might make and how it could affect people nearby.
  4. Permitted Noise Levels: Setting limits on how much noise is allowed to keep residents and the public safe.
  5. Contaminated Land: Dealing with any polluted land to avoid environmental dangers.
  6. Air Quality: Looking at how the development might affect the air we breathe.

The Licensing Act 2003 oversees licensed premises with four aims: preventing crime, ensuring public safety, avoiding public disturbance, and safeguarding children.

Responsibilities of Nottingham City Council as a Responsible Authority:

  1. Prevention of Public Nuisance: The Environmental Health and Safer Places Team evaluates licence applications to prevent noise issues that could disturb the community.
  2. Consultation on Licensing Applications: They review business and street trading licences in the Nottingham City Council area, ensuring they align with the Licensing Act's goals.
  3. Recommendations and Conditions: They may suggest conditions to the Licensing Authority to reduce potential public disturbances.
  4. Breach of Conditions: Breaking licence rules is a legal offense and can lead to action by the Licensing Authority or Director of Public Prosecutions.
  5. Licence Review: If a licensee doesn't meet the Act's objectives, their licence may be reviewed by a Responsible Authority or interested party.
  6. Licensing Panel Action: The Licensing Panel can modify conditions, suspend, or revoke a licence if necessary.

The participation of the Environmental Health and Safer Places Team in planning and licensing procedures is crucial for guaranteeing that developments comply with environmental regulations, reduce pollution hazards, and enhance community well-being.
