Scrap Metal Dealers

Overview

If you want to collect or sell scrap metal, you need a scrap metal dealer's licence. Scrap metal includes steel, iron, copper, brass, and aluminium, but not gold or silver. You must keep records of what and from whom you collect, and cannot pay in cash. You may also need planning permission and a waste carrier's licence.

You are a scrap metal dealer if you buy or sell scrap metal in a business, online, or as a motor salvage operator.

There are two types of licences, each valid for three years. These are defined as follows:

• A site licence for premises used by you in the City of Nottingham during the course of your business as a scrap metal dealer (the licence may identify more than one site (premises) so long as they are within our district)
• A collectors licence for mobile collectors - those who are not operating from a Site in the City but who collects scrap metal by means of visits from door to door

• If you intend to use a vehicle to transport the material, a copy of the Waste Carrier Licence is required with your application.

Returning Application

• Once completed, return the application and supporting documents with a relevant contact number for payment to be taken at the time of processing. Cheques are not accepted.

Waste Carriers Licence

Note: Anyone registering as a scrap metal dealer is also required to obtain a Waste Carriers Licence from the Environment Agency.

A person may only hold one type of licence issued by this authority but you may also hold, or require a licence from other authorities depending on where the collection of scrap metal takes place.
