About our Organisation

Primary is a visual arts charity and community space housed in a Grade II listed former Victorian school in Radford, Nottingham. Founded in 2012, our mission is to sustain a thriving arts ecology in an unpredictable and inequitable world, by supporting artists and communities to engage in a wide range of cultural activity. We believe in the transformative power of creativity to build connections, challenge injustice, and reimagine the world. Rooted in creativity and collaboration, we champion artists' development, community building, and drive social impact in our neighbourhood and beyond. 

Our free programme includes exhibitions, creative education, commissions and long-term projects developed in collaboration with local communities.

Summary of events and activities to be delivered 

As part of our Community Takeover Programme at Primary (Seely Road, Nottingham) this funding will support:

• Monthly events in partnership with Heya (August 2025–March 2026) with activities including cooking, creative workshops, health and wellbeing and women’s empowerment. The final event in March 2026 will be a larger community celebration.
• Family Activity Day (August 2025) in partnership with Refugee Roots, The Toy Library, Open Arms Organisation and Heya. Building on previous successful events, this provides local families with an inspiring summer event, bringing community together to celebrate food, culture and creativity. 
• Free drop-in gardening sessions (Every Friday 11am-1pm from August-October 2025 + Feb-March 2026) Providing a nourishing space for volunteers to learn about food growing, connect with nature in the city and support wellbeing.
