Name of Organisation: The African Women Empowerment Forum

Short Description of Organisation

The African Women Empowerment Forum (AWEF) is a Nottingham-based registered charity (No. 1191388) dedicated to empowering African women, refugees, asylum seekers, and migrant families through education, wellbeing, and community programmes.

Founded in 2006, AWEF provides culturally responsive support such as ESOL training, health and digital skills workshops, and community food initiatives. Through projects like Grandma’s Kitchen and Health Inequality Research, AWEF works to reduce poverty, promote inclusion, and improve quality of life for marginalised families across Nottingham and the East Midlands.

Summary of planned Activity and events

Through the UKSPF Winter Support Grant, AWEF will deliver Grandma’s Kitchen—a warm hub and food support initiative providing free hot meals, essential winter items, and practical advice to families under financial strain. Sessions will be held twice weekly (Wednesdays and Saturdays) from October 2025 to March 2026 at AWEF’s Victoria Court hub.

Each session will offer freshly prepared meals, food parcels, and cost-of-living guidance, alongside social connection and wellbeing support.

Additionally, AWEF will deliver an Energy Efficiency Support Programme distributing LED bulbs, eco kettles, and draught excluders, with live demonstrations and drop-in advice on reducing energy costs.

The initiative will support over 120 Nottingham households, targeting refugees, asylum seekers, single parents, and elderly residents. The programme aims to reduce food and energy insecurity while fostering inclusive community resilience through shared meals, education, and warmth.
