Name of Organisation: Bulwell Forest Gardens

Short Description of Organisation

Bulwell Forest Garden is a community green space, where people come together through growing, playing, socialising, learning, cooking and caring for the land.

Our aims are:

  • To develop a community garden to include food growing, wildlife areas and community spaces, creating a stronger sense of community responsibility and ownership.
  • To provide opportunities for local people and the wider community to come together, learn about, and be involved with, growing food and have access to affordable fruit and vegetables.
  • To support healthy-living, environmental and food growing education, training and volunteering for all ages including community groups and schools.

Summary of planned Activity and events

Mondays 1pm-4pm
Room 1. Social space, board games, refreshments.
Room 2. Crafty Mondays – guided activity or bring your own project

Wednesdays 1pm-4pm
Room 1. Social space, board games, refreshments

Our community connector will coordinate the Warm Hub, providing refreshments, promoting conversation, offering opportunities to get involved with small tasks, signposting to other services including referrals to Sharewear and Bestwood and Bulwell Foodbank where needed, and collecting surplus food from supermarkets through the Neighbourly scheme.

Our Warm Hub has been designed through consultation with our regular volunteers and visitors who are concerned about the expense of utilities over the winter, feeling isolated and our regular projects, such as Lunch Club and Gardening, reducing their services in winter. We aim to welcome predominantly adults with complex mental health issues and mild to moderate learning difficulties, and older people who live on their own.

We will help reduce the burden of the cost of living crisis by providing a social, warm space twice a week, reducing the time the heating needs to be on at home, providing free food to take home, strengthening
emotional well-being (which is affected in winter with worry about money and isolation) through therapeutic crafts and social connections.

Planned Dates:

  • We will provide a warm hub 2 afternoons a week for 15 weeks throughout November, December, January and February (excluding weeks beginning 22 December and 29 December). All Activities will take place in the newly built Eco Garden Rooms at Bulwell Forest Garden
