Heritage Funding Opportunities

A wide range of external funding opportunities are available to support the conservation, repair and sustainable reuse of Nottingham’s historic buildings and places.

These include national grant programmes such as the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Historic England, alongside charitable trusts, foundations and specialist organisations offering support for projects of varying sizes—from small-scale repairs to major capital schemes.

Funding is also available for community-led heritage initiatives, as well as low-interest loans for eligible organisations.

A regularly updated directory of potential heritage funders is available to download below to help applicants identify appropriate sources of support and develop funding bids.

Heritage Action Zone Grants

In 2017 Nottingham City Council secured £2.7m of funding from Historic England’s Heritage Action Zone scheme to revitalise the city centre and enhance Nottingham’s built heritage.

During the course of a 5-year period this delivered a range of improvements to various historic buildings and conservation areas, including:

  • 14 historic shop fronts reinstated in places like Market Street, Carrington Street and Wheeler Gate.
  • Listed status given to significant buildings, such as Richmond House (Canal Street) and the Raleigh cycle company’s former head offices on Lenton Boulevard.
  • Repairs and conversation of the Birkin Building (Lace Market) for the creative industries.
  • A new roof for Bromley House, a Grade II* listed subscription library on Angel Row.
