Attending an Inquest: A Guide for Medical Students and Attendees
The type of case for each inquest is clearly indicated on the court list, ensuring attendees are aware of the nature of the proceedings.
For Medical Students:
If you are a medical student wishing to attend an inquest, it is advisable to consider attending a medical completion, which may be more relevant to your course. When attending with fellow students as part of your coursework, we recommend a maximum of four students per session.
It's crucial to recognise that bereaved family and friends may be present during the inquest. We kindly ask all attendees to act with sensitivity and respect.
General Guidelines for Inquest Attendees:
Arrive 15 minutes before the scheduled hearing and notify the reception desk at the Council House upon arrival.
The recommended dress code for court attendance is smart casual, unless otherwise instructed, especially for witnesses.
In-person attendance is the only option; virtual links are not available.
For Press:
Inquests are conducted in open court, allowing press attendance for listed cases. Press members should arrive at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time, introduce themselves to the front desk and court officer, and adhere to respectful conduct at all times, given the potential presence of bereaved family members.
Requests for Findings of Fact:
After the Coroner instructs the Coroner's Officer, a copy of the findings of fact will be sent to you. Please note that it cannot be dispatched before this time. While we understand the urgency of such requests, we assure you that we will send the findings as swiftly as possible.
Queries and Assistance:
For any inquiries related to court attendance or other matters, please email Coroners Office and one of our officers will assist you promptly.
