This page includes information for prospective local government candidates and their election agents on the nomination process.
Local election candidates
Prior to any election, prospective candidates must meet certain criteria before they are allowed to stand as a candidate.
To qualify as a candidate for a local election you must be:
- At least 18 years old.
- A British citizen, an eligible Commonwealth citizen, a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, a qualifying EU citizen or an EU citizen with retained rights.
- Registered to vote in and/or have either lived or worked in the Nottingham City area for at least one year.
There is also a list of disqualifications, which may prevent you from standing. It’s important that you check to see whether you are disqualified and if you are unsure take legal advice before completing a nomination paper.
You must complete and submit a nomination form and supporting papers before the statutory deadline in order to stand as a candidate.
