Overview
If you wish to keep a Dangerous Wild Animal (DWA) within the city of Nottingham, you must hold a licence from Nottingham City Council. Please note only persons aged 18 and above may apply for a DWA licence.
The animals that require a licence are contained in the list below.
This licence does not apply to any animal kept in a zoo, circus, pet shop, or registered scientific establishment, which have their own legislation and licensing.

Applying for a Licence
Please complete the relevant application form and pay the application fee.
Once we have your application, a visit by a vet and an Environmental Health Officer will be arranged.
The licences will be issued once we’re satisfied that:
- It would not be contrary to public interest on the grounds of safety or nuisance
- The applicant is a suitable person to care for the animal(s) and they have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience of the animal’s needs
- The animal’s welfare needs can be maintained in suitable accommodation that allows adequate exercise and prevents escape
- Appropriate procedures are in place to prevent and control the spread of infectious disease and protect the animal in the event of a fire or emergency
