What is a Personal Education Plan (PEP or EPEP)?

A Personal Education Plan or PEP is a document which brings together anyone working with a child or young person. The PEP document captures the child's views on on their education and looks holistically at the child's journey so far to set ambitious, well-supported actions. Any agreed actions may be eligible for funding via the Pupil Premium Plus Grant.

Each PEP  for a child in care is then quality assured by an Education Support Officer and given a compliancy rating. This is to ensure we are constantly improving the educational support offered to young people.

The PEP forms part of a child's Care Plan.

The acronym EPEP just means that the PEP is done electronically using a portal system. We have training available on completing the EPEP system. The dates are available here.

An EPEP meeting can be virtual or in person and is held once every term. For a PEP to take place a social worker and school must be present. The Virtual School, Social worker and School have sections of the EPEP they are responsible for filling out in advance.

During the meeting we introduce everyone and get a general update on how the child or young person is getting on. We look in detail at the child/young person's views and what they feel is going well or needs to change. We explore their likes, if they feel safe and supported in school and their future aspirations.

Next we explore their attainment using teacher assessments. We compare how they are progressing and any changes or successes.

We explore how a child is supported with their behaviour and wellbeing so that they can feel able to access education. We look at what is in place to support them holistically and any interventions or referrals which may need to be set up. We also consider a child's attendance and make sure we are aware of any absences and why these happened. We work together to improve attendance by putting actions in place.

Next we listen to the parent/carer experience. We hear how the young person or child is getting on at home and anything they feel may support the young person with their education and wellbeing. This includes any after school clubs or support with homework for example.

After lots of discussion and sharing we finally put together some actions and request Pupil Premium Funds if needed. We give everyone responsibility for completing the action by an agreed date and review previous actions to ensure we are all accountable.

We offer training where you can explore what a meeting might look like.

A high quality PEP will always have:

  • The child's voice and thoughts running through each section and all the way to meaningful actions.
  • A positive, supportive tone which recognises the challenges a child or young person may face and looks at what the adults can do to support them.
  • Celebrates the successes and looks at promoting the child's strengths.
  • Sets ambitious, specific and time bound actions which link to the child voice and academic targets.
  • Attendance is taken seriously and it is clear what is being done to support a child/young person with lower attendance.
  • A strong update and information around wellbeing. The PEP should show that the professionals know the child well and are aware of their history and the challenges they may face.
  • Personalised and bespoke support where more traditional support is not working. Creative, solution focused adjustments are considered and communication between the network is strong.
  • Requests for Pupil Premium Plus Grant funding are specific and focused directly on the child's needs.
