What we do as a Virtual School
The Virtual School has a dedicated Education Support Officer who specialises in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
All Education Support Officers can provide support to children, including when additional help is needed because of a special educational need or disability.
We offer advice, guidance and signposting for children who were previously looked after, children who currently have a social worker, and children in kinship care.
To support children in care with SEND, the Virtual School works closely with a range of professionals. These include social workers, foster carers, SEND caseworkers, independent reviewing officers, schools, SENCOs and CAMHS professionals.
When needed, the professionals working around the child may meet to discuss additional support and strategies. This helps to make sure the child’s needs are fully assessed and appropriately met.
The SEND Service
The Nottingham City SEN Service, offer guidance and support for young people aged between 0-25 in relation to Special Educational Needs and/or Disability, including those young people with Education Health and Care Plans.
The SEND Service offers support for children in care and previously looked after children with SEND who:
- Live in Nottingham City and/or
- Attend a school in the city and/or
- Are looked after by Nottingham City but living elsewhere.
The SEND Service works closely with the network around the young person in care, such as: foster carers, social workers, staff from the education setting, Virtual School and health services.
The SEND Service works to ensure young people in care with SEND are supported to get the most out of school life and fulfil their true potential in the most appropriate setting for them.
